Book Are you game?

Overview

New faculty member Wouter Vergote co-authored the new, comprehensively-updated edition of Prajit Dutta’s widely-used introduction to game theory and its applications.

A necessary rehabilitation

In recent years, game theory has become an important methodological tool for all fields of social sciences, biology and computer science. This made it necessary to comprehensively update Strategies and Games, originally written by co-author Prajit Dutta. “The first edition was published in 1999, more than 20 years ago,” comments Wouter who just joined ESCP. “My contribution to the new version of the book was mainly in the writing of the nine new chapters and the thorough updates of all the chapters of the first edition.”

Writing in a style that is at once rigorous and reader-friendly, Dutta and Vergote provide an excellent introduction to game theory.” - Kyle Bagwell (Stanford)

This second edition not only takes into account new game theoretical concepts and applications such as bargaining and matching, it also provides an array of chapters on game theory applied to the political arena. New examples, case studies, and applications relevant to a wide range of behavioural disciplines such as OPEC, voting, climate change, and school choice are now included. The authors map out alternate pathways through the book for instructors in economics, business, and political science.

A unique balance between the theoretical and the practical

“Writing in a style that is at once rigorous and reader-friendly, Dutta and Vergote provide an excellent introduction to game theory. Key concepts are carefully developed and illustrated with a range of interesting applications to economics, politics, and business,” comments Stanford University Donald L. Lucas Endowed Professor in Economics Kyle Bagwell.
